Did you recently get an ereader? You’re not alone. E-book readers were the #1 tech gift this holiday season. Now that you have it, wouldn’t it be great to download books for FREE from your library?
Short answer: you can.
The long answer:
1 – Before you can download a library ebook, you need to determine what kind of extra software you’ll need. For ipods, ipads and iphones, you can download the Overdrive app from the app store. You can also get a free app for Android phones and tablets. If you have a Nook, you’ll need to have a copy of Adobe Digital Editions, which is free to download from Adobe. Digital Editions is an iTunes-like program that helps you organize your ebooks and sends them to your Nook.
2 – If you have the Overdrive App installed on your device, you can search and download items from within the app. It’s very simple. Make sure you have your library card handy, though!
3 – If you are using a Nook or other epub-format ebook reader and have downloaded and installed all of the necessary software on your computer, you now get to search the WPLC Digital Books catalog. This catalog contains ebooks, a handful of streaming videos, a completely worthless music collection and a ton of audio book downloads. Make sure you are searching for ebooks and not audios! An audiobook will have one of these symbols on the page:
or
.
4 – When you have found your ebook, click on “Add to my cart.” If you do not see this option, then you will be able to click on “Place a hold” and be put on a waiting list for the item. Once the book is added to your cart, you’ll be asked if you’d like to check out. Would you? If you would, then you’ll be asked for your library system. We belong to the Mid-Wisconsin Federated Library System. THEN you’ll be asked for you library card number and PIN (call us if you don’t know your PIN–it’s usually the last 4 digits of your phone number).
5 – After all of that, you will be able to download your book. Open Digital Editions and your book should be imported into it. From there, plug your device into your computer and transfer the book from your computer to your device.
6 – If you have a Kindle, you will go through your Amazon.com account to manage titles. You do not have to download any extra software. For a detailed video, please wander over to the Overdrive website.
To find out more, please call the library and talk to Steev Baker (626-4312) or better yet, stop by with your device! The library also has three Barnes and Noble Nook e-book readers that you can check out.
