We realize it’s President’s Day, but we are OPEN nonetheless. The Kewaskum Public Library is only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Memorial Day, Labor Day, New Years, Easter, and Independence Day. We’re not a federal organization, so we do not close for federal holidays. We are also open on Halloween.

The Amish: Who are they?

There are an estimated 8,000-12,000 Amish in Wisconsin. Author Richard Dawley has written 8 books about Amish and Mennonite culture. He has traveled extensively to Amish communities around the US and even to Switzerland, from whence the Amish originally come. We’re excited to have Mr. Dawley joining us on Tuesday, March 13, with a presentation on “The Plain People.” He has made it his goal to dispel myths and build understanding about the Amish and other Anabaptist groups. This program is FREE and open to the public. Please sign up at the library or call 626-4312 for more information. The program starts at 6pm and includes time for discussion.

New stuff and gone stuff

We do have some new magazine subscriptions this year: Natural Home and Gardens, Creative Crochet, and the Packer Report. A few more will be coming in, we’ll let you know about them when they get here. We’ve also been getting in more Wii games. You can get a list of our Wii games by clicking here. So what’s going away? Shonen Jump, for one. Magazines are starting to limit their availability to libraries, some disappearing altogether. Also, with the new Wii system debuting at the end of 2012, it’s only a matter of time before we stop getting new games. But take heart! Something new and exciting is just around the corner!

Magazine Sale

NOT ACTUAL TITLES

To make room for new issues, every January we hold a sale of all of our past magazine titles. This year we will be selling all of our 2010 magazines, as well as some issues from 2011. Kids’ magazines, craft magazines, hunting and fishing magazines–over 70 different titles will be on sale! Only $3 per year. The sale will begin on Friday, January 27 at 10am. Sorry, we cannot reserve issues or titles for individuals.

As you can see, we were just shy of 80,000 items checked out last year–record-breaking library use! E-book numbers are forthcoming. Internet use was way up this year: you accessed the web 6381 times in 2011. Thanks for all of the support and keep watching this website for library news and updates.

January Beading Class

On Tuesday, January 24, at 6pm, we will host a beginner’s beading class taught by Xpressions Bead and Yarn Shop in Barton. The project this year will be a needle and thread snowflake pendant (similar to last year). If you’re new to beading, this is the perfect chance for you to learn! Cost is only $5 per person!

Did you know that last year we were able to give cards to every student at Kewaskum Elementary School from 1st – 5th grades–that’s over 200 new cardholders! We visit every elementary school in the district to talk about the summer reading program in the spring. St. Lucas 3rd and 4th graders have been visiting the library twice a month to get books for 5 years. We’re happy to serve the students in our community during the school year and during the summer. We hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!

I know, Hanukkah is barely upon us this year, but the time has come to turn to the subject of TAXES. Not how much you pay, but where you’ll get your 2011 tax forms. For a few years now, public libraries have been the only places where paper tax forms are available. Both at the state and federal level, revenue departments have been trying to persuade people to go digital. The problem? Not everyone has access to a computer. And not everyone with a computer trusts the posting of their earnings information to a website. 2012 will be a watershed year in terms of paper forms: at least a dozen states have so far said they will not print them. We recently had a letter from the Wisconsin Dept of Revenue warning us that we will be getting a reduced number of forms this year. So if you want to get your taxes done on paper, make sure to come in quickly after January 1st to see what’s available. Nothing is more fun than thinking about tax forms over the holidays!
