Help us celebrate 100 years

On Thursday, November 7th, come and help the Kewaskum Public Library staff celebrate 100 years of service to the Kewaskum area! 100 years?!?!? Has it been that long already? It has. The library began in 1913 as a project of the Kewaskum Women’s Club. The Village converted a room on the second floor of the village hall into a library and Miss Lilly Schlosser was appointed the first head librarian. In those days, librarians served for 2-week terms, all of them were members of the Women’s Club. After nearly 3 years of this arrangement, the Village of Kewaskum took over maintenance of the library. Miss Adele Gottsleiben was the first official librarian and she had a budget of $300 to work with in 1916.

Since then, of course, things have changed. The library was moved into its present location in 1950 when a brigade of local girl scouts walked all 3000 books down the street to the new building. In 1985, the library was expanded to its current size, 2986 square feet for just under 30,000 items:  books, cds, magazines, games, dvds and computers. What will the future bring?

We will have an open house with refreshments on Thursday, November 7th from 6pm – 8pm. Stop by and say hello and help us celebrate 100 years!
